Bishoujo: Supergirl 1 (Review 2.0)

Updated: Mar 30, 2020

With a new version of Bishoujo Supergirl(HERE) just right around the corner,I thought it might be appropriate to do a version 2.0 review of this lovely #Bishoujo statue. Is it out dated? Does it really need a brand new version? Guess this is what the review is for, right? Let's (re)check her out!

I have the box somewhere on storage, but that's not exactly the most exciting thing about this figure. I'll just use some old pics from my old blog post to show what the box looks like; believe me, it looks like your standard Bishoujo box! Albeit, I'll always have a fascination for the way Kotobukiya displays their product along with the artwork. However, Bishoujo statues, for all its sexiness, all its glory, details, and vibrant color, should never be encased in this kind of packaging. Believe it or not, I was once that kind of collector. Yes, that's not me anymore. A little bit of history about me.

Now, talking about the statue itself, I for on just right around the corner, I thought it might be appropriate to do a version 2.0 review of this lovely to show statue. Is it outdated? I kept my lighting down just because I love how the cape's dynamic captures some shadowing effect all on its own.

And this is what I'm talking about how it really does dance with some major fanservice line. The panty shot and the deliciously perfect buttocks of Kara is just begging for some major perverted attention. But to Kotobukiya's defense, Supergirl's costume doesn't exactly provide modesty for a superheroine that flies faster than a speeding bullet.

Now going beyond the eye candiness of this Bishoujo statue, the implied dynamics is something to appreciate also. The detail in her clothes movement really does look organic with the way the wrinkles on the cape and skirt are reacting to her flight.

Now the Bishoujo line also has their trademark with the tips of the hair fading into lighter colors. It doesn't fit the character or the 'movement' of the statue all the time, but with Supergirl, I think it does. Also, the way her hair is 'moving' with her, is simply well done.

As for her overall demeanor, it's obvious that she is in the middle of flight and something took her attention. Whatever caught Kara's attention doesn't take anything away from the provocative way she is sculpted.

Also, the way her hair is 'moving' with her, is simply well done. are here, current Bishoujo's also have fancier stands, back then, they were either really plain or done conservatively. The clear stand doesn't take anything away from Supergirl considering she does have the cloud/smoke that gives an illusion of flight.

And Kara is definitely worhty of the title 'Bishoujo' since she is pretty as heck. This statue line never fails to impress with that signature even if the character is usually depicted or not commonly known to be the prettiest/sexiest of the bunch. Kotobukiya definitely had an easier time plugging in an already attracting character to their signature style.

A limited edition of this Bishoujo Supergirl did come out some time back, which pays homage to the storyline: "Power". This particular arc intorduced fans to "Dark Supergirl". A bit of a convoluted idea with the multicolored Kryptonite involved, but just nkow that THIS STATUE exists and it's not easy to get in more ways than one. Suffice it to say, the Dark Supergirl is not going to be in my collection for reasons quite obvious.

It is almost a standard thing to have Bishoujos have accessories these days. A variant head, some kind of option with weapons, etc. Since Supergirl is a few years back, she wasn't graced with any of that. We do get Streak, which adds a layer of fun to the statue. And while we are here, current Bishoujo's also have fancier stands, back then, they were either really plain, or done conservatively. I have her

Now it's hard to fully say just how much I'll like the "Supergirl Returns" more compared to the one I have now. While this is just a protorype shot, I can at least safely assume that the stand will improve (I'm guessing the "S" emblem). And just from a glance, it looks like they are definitely putting more details and sharper colors this time around. Despite being in a bit more of a neutral stance, the part of her that can be easily influenced by wind (cape, skirt, and hair) still retains the dynamic look to them. Overall, I can't assume too much since this is just a prototype shot; rest assured that when I do have her, I will get all the juicy details, the pros and cons, and the side by side comparison. I have her Preordered and will be waiting patiently.

Overall, this figure still retains its glory despite it having some years behind it. A beautiful looking piece, sexy, provocative, detailed, and dynamic in posture are all the things that Bishoujo is known for so Supergirl does not disappoint. Being a popular character (and obviously meant for a little fan service), this Bishoujo is definitely a must for DC collectors and basically just for anyone looking for an alluring piece on their shelf. The only drawback is finding one that isn't going to compete with super high end collectible.

Until Next Time!
