Funko POP: Scarlet Spider - Funko Exclusive

Writer's picture: OnyxOnyx

Ben's doing whatever a Spider does! And what does a spider do? Well if gets into a multiverse, it bites a Parker (or not, maybe a Banner, a Stacy, a Thompson, etc). Talking about Ben, this isn't his first time as a POP. Well, we'll get into that in a bit. For now, let's take a look at this Funko.com exclusive, shall we?

The moment I saw this promoted, I wanted it for sure! It's Scarlet Spider from the 90s with a hood on! Yes, such a grand variant!

A bobblehead. Surprise.
A bobblehead. Surprise.

Ben's Scarlet Spider look is a product of the 90s, no doubt about it. The pouches and straps are clear indicators of that. The light blue hoodie with the spider logo, which adds a good contrast against the bright red tights he wears is also 90s nostalgia that takes me back to those days. All of these are presented accurately with this POP. The hood over his head and the strings flowing to the side give that emo-gritty look. While not very dynamic, the pose still has that presence that gives Scarlet Spider some character despite him being very neutral. All in all, the sculpt work is something I can appreciate and I have no complaints at all!

I love the wrinkles on his hood and those torn-up sleeves!

The colors for this POP are pretty accurate to the comic book version of Scarlet Spider (the first one--there are millions of Spider-folks taking that name now). The bright blue hoodie is a good contrast to the red tights. With the hood on, these two colors are pretty equal in presentation. The straps on his ankles, the belts, and the web shooters all have the proper colors they need. I do have a complaint with how prominent the difference is between the head color and the body. The blue and red are drastically different than the body color. There is also bleeding on my copy with the eyes. The white paint is coming on to the pretty obvious blue. But, take nothing from that critique. I do love the overall presentation of Ben's colors.

Here is POP: Scarlet Spider - Funko Exclusive next to POP Scarlet Spider - Across the Spiderverse. The latter has more shadowing going on and got the paint details but it was the style of the source material so can't hold it on our new Scarlet Spider. I do love both equally the same so there's that.

Maybe the darker and nonglossy red of the mask symbolizes the hood cutting off light and casting a shadow on the said mask? Hmmm. Don't know.

Despite the coloring call-out, I do love this POP. I'm very happy with how he turned out and I am very glad to add him to my Spiderverse collection. I love the pose, the colors are well executed in most places, and to top it off, I'm one of the few who actually like the idea of the Clone Saga and characters like Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker. So this POP? A win. Recommend? Hell yeah.

Until Next Time!
